An economic and social system in which the means of production are privately owned for the purposes of personal profit maximization. This project examines the cultural effects of capitalism and it's focus on profit over people.

Ability is defined by the capacity of a body to function in a particular space; what is the relationship between one's body and their environment? Therefore, disability is an imperfect fitting of the body into a space, resulting in limited access.

(Dis)ability can be used to refer to the way disability and ability are differently valued categories placed onto humans by social perspectives. (Sami Schalk "Integrating Race, Transforming Feminist Disability Studies")

Fear, in the context of this research, is used to describe the harmful ways that people are made to feel about other groups of people. Do not picture someone screaming and running away, picture someone teaching their peers to either avoid or attack a certain type of human.

White supremacy is the belief that white folks are better, more worthy, and more human than other races. This belief results in a system designed to benefit white people and disadvantage other groups. White supremacy was, and is, used to justify colonization, slavery, and inequitable rights.

Sex is the biological analysis of a body as female, male, or intersex. One's sex can be found through multiple factors, mainly chromosomes. However, most peoples' sex is decided, at birth, from their external genitalia - which can result in inaccuracy.

Gender is a social category designed by people. Western standards define gender with a binary -- girl and boy. However, gender has historically been defined in many different ways across cultures and is very malleable for many folks.

Amateur sports are sports people play for pleasure, not profit. The idea of amateurism in sports was made by wealthier white folks to differentiate themselves from working class athletes, specifically athletes of color. It was used to demonize athletes of color who used their athleticism as a form of economic exploration. 

Professional sports are sports that are considered careers, with paychecks. Professional sports were developed in tandem with amateur sports, aiding in the differentiation between athletes of color and white athletes.

When people attempt to surveille and control other peoples actions or involvement in something, that is called policing. It is often seen from the authority figures of an organization or program.

This is another way to describe someone as oppressed or disenfranchised. They all mean that a person, based off how they are perceived, are disadvantaged socially -- treated worse.

Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, Intersectionality works to explain how people take up more than one disenfranchised role, and those roles interact to create unique experiences of marginalization and treatment.
